A day after Mohammad Yousuf was appointed Pakistan captain, Younis Khan tried to douse the flames of discord by assuring his fans.
The Pakistan Cricket Board announced that less than a month since Younis Khan was reinstated following match fixing allegations after the ICC Champions Trophy 2009 in South Africa, Younis Khan requested a break to rejuvenate and rediscover his form.
But there are conflicting reports being attributed to Younis Khan. On the one hand, he has spoken to certain media persons, stating that he felt himself drained, having lost total command of a team of rebels, (nine of which has complained to Ejaz Butt, the PCB Chairman, about Younis Khan’s leadership) and that he was in need of a time out after the manner in which Pakistan lost the third ODI of the Cool and Cool Pakistan New Zealand series match in Abu Dhabi.
On the other hand, he has also released statements to the effect that the decision was nobody but his and not made under duress or while holding grudges against anyone. It was only done so that he could get a break to find his form, which meant forgoing the immediate Pakistan’s tour to New Zealand for the Test series.
But he vowed to come back with a bang, but whether the captaincy will be waiting for him is highly questionable.
Meanwhile Mohammad Yousuf enjoys a strange turn of events after a tumultuous relationship with the PCB following his ICL links. His not securing the IPL deal despite towing PCB’s line also made Yousuf experience angst against the board. But the personal differences appear to have been dissolved in the face of another crisis for Pakistan cricket.
The first of the two Twenty20 Internationals get underway in Dubai and it will be a test for Shahid Afridi to keep his team focussed on the game against New Zealand and not on the drama off it.
